On March 15, 2012, Karen Reilly introduced Lucy’s mother, British Actress Patricia Knight-Webb, to the Apopka Boys and Girls club. Trish, as she likes to be called, prepared an interactive afternoon introducing the children to the famous playwright William Shakespeare. She chose the monologue, “All the world’s a stage” from the play, As You Like It. At first, she read the monologue to the entire group of boys and girls, then they spent time talking about the wording used and the different stages of growing older. kidsTrish then divided the children up into different groups, so she and the staff could coach them on acting out the different stages from the monologue. The boys and girls had great fun acting out their parts, while the others had to guess who they were. She was amused to see how the groups and individuals developed - some got right into it, while others watch and slowly got involved. In the end, even the most reluctant asked if they too could join in too. She praised the staff and said they were wonderful. Her goal was to open the door to the children so they could experience the theater as an alternative media to understand and feel the characters passion, adventure, comedy, drama, horror, history, love, manipulation, mystery etc. Children have an incredible imagination and by sharing positive stories from either a play, guest speaker or a book they can, without knowing it, learn alternative ways to help them cope with real life drama, diversity, and life in general.
